Hi folks,
In response to Moray's prompting on d-d-a, I'm writing to confirm that we
are interested in putting forth a bid to host DebConf14 in Portland, OR.

The bid page is still a bit light on logistical details, but we have a
prospective lead on space associated with Portland State University which we
believe would be a good fit for a DebConf.
I know the bid process for this year is generally behind schedule. Can the
DebConf team please provide a deadline for completion of
<https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/LocationCheckList> for Portland to be
considered?

Wow! If DC14 were to happen in Portland, maybe I'd get over my social
anxiety quirks and finally meet some of you fine people, get involved,
perhaps as a developer, and perhaps one day fulfil my fantasy of
traveling to exotic venues of future DebConfs. Ha! Really I ought to
meet you folks at a BSP or Lucky Lab one of these days, irregardless.
Count me in as a volunteer, a year in advance. I don't have any
connection to PSU, so don't know how helpful I can be other than labor.
Perhaps monitor debconf IRC and mailing lists and offer to help at any
opportunity.
Introduction: I'm a lurker, and not connected to Debian in any official
way other than having been a user since way back in 0.93/pre-toy-story
times, Debian is my "daily driver" at work and home, laptops, a bunch of
Xen hosts at the Pittock building. Work in software development (Java,
telecom), consumes me, I should have plenty of spare time to give back
to Debian other than the odd bug report/patch, but you know how it is
when your career and hobbies overlap, my off-hours are usually wasted on
relaxation and libations ;-)

Thanks to you for volunteering, too! FWIW, the nature and scale of DebConf
is such that in-kind food donations are really not that useful. Donated
food works well for something like a bugsquashing party, but DebConf is more
a marathon than a sprint; the meals really need to be predictable and
consistently organized.
We certainly will need folks to rustle up monetary donations from local
sponsors when the time comes. Is that something you'd be interested in
helping with?

DebConf is an amazing whirlwind event, since like everything Debian it is
entirely volunteer-driven. You needn't have any fear that you won't be able
to help - help of all kinds will be needed over the year to come.

Thanks for adding me to the wiki bid article. It looks much more
complete than a month ago, good job! I'm surprised The Ondine offers
accommodations, I thought it was strictly student housing, or at least
it was in 2000 when I was couch surfing there for a few months…

I would hope that you have most of the information by now, but I
appreciate that it takes more than 5 minutes to fill in the checklist,
and that we never really announced a deadline for bids to complete it
this time round. (The last few years it was 1 January.) It would be
much better if your proposals were online in time for people to have an
initial read before the next DebConf team meeting on 11 February, when
we might think about setting a timeline for the next stage of the
process. To enable that, could you fill in the wiki page by Thursday 7
February (= before Friday)?

Hi, Steve and Portland team,
Sorry for answering this so late. This at least makes the impression
that the bid process is not so much behind schedule (hey, this is
still early 2013!)
We will (most likely) be formally announcing Feb28 as the deadline for
presenting the bids in a couple of hours at most. I see the Wiki page
is mostly filled-in, with some minor points still missing (but not
*everything* has to be detailed, I guess).
Just for completeness, please update the main DC14 Wiki to show the
proposal is not anymore in the early stages:

If you can get some pricing previsions regarding food, I'd say your
proposal is in great shape.
