Hey y'all,
Having utterly failed over the past year-and-some in my goal of getting
regular Debian meet-ups going in the area, I've decided to try another
tactic. Maybe some of you have used Doodle before - it's a really nice way
to sift through options when you need to make a group decision, and IME is a
good way to get input even from those who wouldn't otherwise be bothered to
follow up to an email thread. :)

Please ignore the dates on this poll, this is strictly to give us an idea of
what day of week + time works well for people. Once we converge on
something that works well for the group, we can talk about which week of the
month we should pick to start doing standard meet-ups.
As for where / what, my working assumption is that this will be a pub
get-together of some sort; but I know we have at least one list subscriber
who's under 21 and we may have others who aren't drinkers (or who are
otherwise not fond of pubs?) and I want this to be inclusive, so if a pub is
a bad idea for any reason, please let us know what would work better!
BTW, to further entice you to participate in the doodle poll... I have told
people repeatedly that I wouldn't consider trying to organize a DebConf in
Portland so long as we couldn't even organize regular local meet-ups. Well,
I'm just back from NYC and on a bit of a DebConf high, and putting in a
Portland bid for DebConf 12 seems like a really swell idea, but again only
if I can persuade myself that the local community will pull together behind
such a thing. There are lots of other Debian folks in the US who would be
willing to help out with a Portland DebConf, but there's a limit on how much
they can do from afar. So if you think it would be neat to have DebConf in
Portland, please regard the monthly beerings as a preliminary meeting of the
DebConf local team and vote in the poll accordingly. :)

Hey all,
Well, the post-DebConf travel season is not yet over. :) Anthony Towns,
former Debian Project Leader and all around hoopy frood, is stopping by
Portland this week on his way back from New York. I therefore propose a
gathering of people and drinking of beverages, as is my wont.
Since he's arriving Monday evening and leaving sometime Wednesday-ish,
Tuesday is the optimal day to get together in the sense that it's a day that
works at all. And 7pm tends to be a fair time for get-togethers. So I
propose we get together this Tuesday, August 24 at 7pm at the Old Market
Pub:
6959 S.W. Multnomah Blvd.
Portland, OR 97223

"Why Old Market?" you ask? Well, because the one person beside AJ that I
know can make it that night is me, and it's convenient for me to get to. :)
Besides, I thought it was worth testing whether picking a different meeting
point would work to draw out people that we don't usually see otherwise.
(Also: shuffleboard!) But if there is anyone at all who wants to join us for
whom this is too out of the way, *please* tell me and I'm more that happy to
move this somewhere more central.
Either way, please RSVP to me (on-list or off-list is fine) so I know
whether we should plan to reserve a table that night.
Thanks,

Hi,
(Yes, I know, it's probably pretty narcissistic to start a mail off by
talking about myself, but hey)
As of yesterday, I'm in the Portland area, visiting my cousin (Marian
Verhelst) who lives with her husband and children in Beaverton.
I'd love to meet some local debian people, and had sent a mail to
-private suggesting we meet. Rodrigo Gallardo was the only person to
reply to that mail, apart from a suggestion by Ben Hutchings that I try
this list. Apparently Rodrigo isn't known yet in the local Debian
community...
So let's fix that, then. I had agreed with Rodrigo to meet this
wednesday around 6:30 PM near the river, have a walk there, look a bit
at the bridges etc, and then go to Bridgeport Brewery to check out the
local beer. Anyone else interested in joining in would, of course, be
welcome to do so.
Of course, I'm also interested in other suggestions, in case people
can't make it. Hey, I'm here to see the area :)
In addition, at debconf, Manoj had suggested he might be interested in
coming over from Seattle during the weekend, and meet up. While that
doesn't sound like a bad idea, I should note that of course I'm here
mainly to visit my cousin, and I can't be off with other people the
_whole_ weekend -- I'll want to do something with them during that time,
too, since they do have to go to work during the week. But beyond that,
I'm happy to meet up either on saturday or on sunday. Just let me know
'soon' :-)
Looking forward to see all of you,
